Settle in

If you have not been in Trondheim before, we recommend watching this video to give you a short preview of what you can expect. In addition, the Visit Trondheim webpage gives an overview of what the town has to offer.

Clothing and climate

In the late summer, the temperatures normally vary between 10 to 20 Celsius degrees. During winter the temperatures can drop well below zero, sometimes to -10.

Trondheim has unpredictable weather; it changes many times a day. When you are doing your practical training in a kindergarten you will be spending quite some time outdoors. You will need to bring wind and rainproof clothes and warm clothes and shoes. DMMH has extra clothes you can borrow. In addition, you can always buy things you need in Trondheim – we have shops with a wide range of this kind of clothes.

More information about nature, weather and climate, see: https://www.studyinnorway.no/living-in-norway/nature-weather-and-climate

Equipment and gear

Since you all are staying for a fairly short period of time, DMMH will lend you basic items you will need to get started in Trondheim. The duffel bag will contain the following items:

1. Duvet
1. Pillow
1. set of bedlinen

Please bring your own towles and bed sheet.

We have a storage room with more things to borrow. Things like kitchen utensils (glasses, plates, knives, bowls, forks, cutting board etc.) and outdoor equipment.

Remember to take good care of the items that you borrow and clean them thoroughly. Any broken or lost items must be replaced. The items are to be returned to DMMH at the end of your stay, so that new students can enjoy the same service.

We recommend that you rent a room in Moholt studentby, but if you prefer to rent at Moholt Allmenning instead, you need to buy a mattress for the bed. The best place to get hold of that is at IKEA Leangen. DMMH does not provide a mattress, but you can, however, borrow a sleeping mat from us. It is not a perfect solution, but it can work for the first night so you do not have to visit Ikea on the arrival day.

Grocery stores

There is a Bunnpris grocery store at Moholt, that is open daily.

Here you find information about opening hours and offers. At Moholt you also find Bamboo Asian Market. Across the main road at Moholt, you find the grocery store Rema 1000, which normally is a bit cheaper than Bunnpris. Almost all shops in Norway, including grocery stores, are closed on Sundays.

PACKING LIST

Here is a suggested packing list of clothes you will need to be outdoors:

  • Waterproof clothing
  • towles
  • Woolen jersey
  • A woolen hat
  • 2 pairs of gloves/mittens
  • A scarf
  • Good waterproof shoes with a rough sole pattern (avoid it being slippery)

Documentation of your stay (certificate of arrival/stay)

When you start your studies at DMMH you will receive a "Certificate of Arrival" from us, stating that you have arrived as planned. This is a document that you send to your home institution.

When you have completed your studies, we give you a "Confirmation of Stay" document, stating the semester start date and the semester end date. This is also a document you should send/give to your home institution upon return to your home country.

What if I get sick?

As a short-term international student in Norway, you will not receive a Norwegian ID number, which means that you cannot get a GP/family doctor in Trondheim.

In Trondheim there are two doctor’s offices in Trondheim that receive students who do not have a GP here:Glþshaugen legesenter, phone: +4773593280. Øya legesenter, phone: +4772543860

If you have to visit the Emergency Room, please call 116117, you will get an appointment. In case of an emergency, call 113.

Medicine

Some medicine, like painkillers (paracetamol) and nasal spray (Xylometazolin, Oksymetazolin) is possible to get in grocery stores. This is normally sold behind the counter or you pay for a “ticket” that you can use on a vending machine in the store. Other medicines you get hold of at the pharmacy (apotek).
